Eighteen PKU Students Win 2009 Annual Corning Scholarships

Peking University, Beijing, May 24, 2010: On the afternoon of May 21, the 2009 Annual Corning Graduate Student Scholarship-Awarding Ceremony was held in the fourth conference room at Yingjie Overseas Exchange Center. Joydeep Lahiri, Vice President of Corning Incorporated Research and Development Department; Wang Limei, PKU Council Vice Chairwoman; Deng Ya, Secretary General of PKU Education Foundation; Zha Jing, Vice Director of PKU Office of Student Affairs and other guests of honor were present at the ceremony which was conducted by Li Rong, Deputy Secretary General of PKU Education Foundation.


Zha Jing, Vice Director of PKU Office of Student Affairs gave an introduction of the scholarship and pronounced the award list. Eighteen PKU students in total achieved 2009 Annual Corning Graduate Student Scholarships. Five of them came from School of Electronics Engineering and Computer Science, three from School of Physics, three from College of Chemistry and Molecular Engineering, three from College of Engineering, two from School of Life Sciences, one from Institute of Molecular Medicine and one from School of Basic Medical Sciences. Afterwards, Fang Zheyu, candidate for PhD degree, delivered a speech on behalf of all scholarship winners, expressing thanks to Corning Incorporated and Peking University, conveying the determination to devote themselves wholeheartedly to the revitalization of the Chinese nation.


At the ceremony, Mr. Lahiri made a warm and friendly speech. He said that Corning Incorporated was willing to exert itself in training the next generation of scientists and engineers as well as promote cooperation with Peking University in the aspect of personnel training. Meanwhile, Mr. Lahiri congratulated scholarship winners heartily, wishing them all the best.


Wang Limei, PKU Council Vice Chairwoman expressed her appreciation for the support of Corning Incorporated for PKU and its students. She encouraged students to cherish precious opportunities, make good use of study and research environment and resources provided by PKU, learn from those who have made great contributions to civilization, work hard, endeavor to contribute to social and cultural development and fulfill the ardent expectations held by their alma mater and Corning Incorporated.


Corning Graduate Student Scholarship was set up by Corning Incorporated at PKU in 2007, which aims at awarding talented graduate students in the fields of information science and technology, medicine, biology, physics, chemistry, life science, materials science, energy science and environmental sciences. There have been fifty four scholarship holders in all so far. The total awards were over RMB 280 000.
