PKU Delegation at SCO Week of Education in Russia

Peking University, Beijing, May 6, 2010: From Apr. 25 to 29, the 3rd Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) "Week of Education" of member states under the motto "Education without Borders" was held at Russian Ministry of Education and Science in Moscow. The theme of this year’s Week of Education is “SCO University as an Innovative Infrastructure of Interaction of Educational Systems in a Multilateral Format.” Participants discussed in depth from a strategic cooperative perspective about the regulation, teaching, scientific research, finance and organizational management of SCO University, aiming at actively promoting the implementation of the new pattern of transnational education.

The 2010 Week of Education was jointly held by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation and Federal Agency for Education, attended by 53 universities from China, Russia, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, and other countries. The Chinese delegation was led by Mr. Yu Jihai, Assistant Inspector of Department of International Cooperation and Exchanges of Ministry of Education and was composed of presidents from 10 universities as well as experts and students.

 

PKU Vice President Yue Sulan Signing the Agreement

 

At the meeting, Prof. Yue Sulan, Vice President of Peking University signed “The Agreement of SCO University on Joint Training of High-level Talents” and papers alike on behalf of PKU. The multilateral cooperation within SCO University has covered nanotechnology, ecology, information technology, energy, and regional studies. PKU takes the lead in nanotechnology on the Chinese side. Prof. Zhu Xing, Assistant President of PKU delivered a keynote speech on “Nanotechnology: Education and Scientific Research,” introducing in detail the achievements of PKU in the cultivation of graduate students of nanotechnology and in scientific research. He also talked about the possibility of cooperation with other universities in the SCO University framework in the future. Mr. Lin Baixue from the Office of International Relations gave a report on PKU’s experience in enrolling and fostering international students as well as on the preparation work for the participation in the enrollment of SCO University. Besides, student representative Fang Zheyu, PhD candidate from the School of Physics, gave a speech on “SCO University in the Eyes of Chinese College Students” at the following Student International Scientific Conference.

 

 

About SCO University:


The idea of SCO University was put forward by Russia, which was confirmed with the signature of an agreement by ministers of education from China, Russia, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, and Tajikistan. Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and his Chinese counterpart Wen Jiabao share the view that the initiation of SCO University is promising and will be fruitful. SCO University intends to launch the largest-scale education project on the Eurasian Continent and make full use of competitive institutions of both member and observer states in joint training programs. The current goal is to establish a multilateral cooperation mechanism and set up a curricular system for education for master’s degree at SCO University.
