Peking University, Apr.21, 2011 : On a weeklong trip to Poland and Romania from April 8 to 14, Peking University (PKU) President Zhou Qifeng and his 7-person delegation had been visiting partner universities, meeting with academic leaders and governmental officials, reconnecting with PKU alumni, and promoting academic friendship and cooperation between PKU and higher education institutions in Eastern Europe.

 

The delegation composed of representatives from PKU's Department of Chinese Language and Literature, School of International Studies, Office of International Relations and Center for Central and Eastern European Studies, visited the Adam Mickiewicz University's Confucius institute, Polish Academy of Sciences, the University of Warsaw and the National School of Political Studies and Public Administration in Romania.

 

 

Improving friendships between universities and upgrading the cooperative levels
In Poland, President Zhou Qifeng and the delegation visited the University of Warsaw (UW) and met with UW Executive Vice President Professor Wlodzimierz Lengauer on April 11. They signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on cooperation, providing advantages and chance for the project communion and deeper cooperation between the two schools.

Later in the week, the delegation exchanged ideas with university leaders and representative scholars of Romanian National Institute of Political Science and Administration (NSPSPA). NSPSPA Professors introduced the delegation to the scientific and educational situation of their school and the two parties discussed about the way to conduct a win-win academic cooperation. While NSPSPA’s leading position in Romanian research is expected to benefit PKU's international relations and East European studies, PKU also hopes to have more collaboration on student exchange and enrolment of overseas students.

Establishing governmental platform to optimize cooperation model between universities

During their weeklong visit, the PKU delegation also met with Sun Yuxi, Chinese ambassador to Poland, Liu Zengwen, Chinese ambassador to Romania, and Mircea Geoanǎ, president of Romania National Assembly.

 

Ambassador Sun introduced Poland’s history, political and social development. He pointed out that higher education played an important role in the development of relations between the two countries. According to Ambassador Liu, higher education in Romania has made progress gradually and already achieved considerably; and there are cooperation potentials between PKU and Romanian universities in fields of engineering, computer science, political and European studies.

President Zhou’s meeting with Romania National Assembly President Mircea Geoanǎ on April 13 was also fruitful. They reached consensus on joint research and the promotion of personnel exchange between PKU and Romanian universities and were looking forward to have an enhanced academic cooperation in future.

 

 

Promoting enrollment publicity and converging alumni resources


The delegation took part in many activities to promote the enrollment publicity. For example, Chen Yuehong, vice director of Department of Chinese Language and Literature of PKU, and Vice Director of Office of International Relations Wang Yong met with presidents of 13 private universities in Poland on April 8, introducing the education policies and models of overseas students. On April 9, as the only Chinese representative, PKU President Zhou Qifeng attended the Council Meeting of International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) and introduced Chinese achievements in related areas.

 

On April 12, President Zhou visited Luo Ming's family, PKU alumnus and former Romania Ambassador to China. As one of the first flow of overseas students coming to China after 1949, Luo has made great contributions to the friendship between China and Romania.

Luo Ming is Romulus Budura's Chinese name and this name has become widely known because of his identity as a China hand, Romania Ambassador to China and envoy of friendship between China and Romania. He represents former international students in China who were dedicated to promote the relationship between China and foreign countries after graduation, and most of all, who had deep love for China.

 

"I am very grateful to the cultivation of Peking University", said Luo. He shared his experience in promoting the relationship between China and Romania and expressed his willingness to support the study of Eastern Europe countries.

 

"The development of Peking University is related closely with Chinese history and keeps pace with the world's changes. Excellent alumni are great treasures of PKU, links between PKU and the whole world, so it's important to explore abundant resources of overseas students in PKU's internationalization process," said President Zhou.

The National School of Political Studies and Public Administration, Romania  

The National School of Political Studies and Public Administration, established in 1990s, aims mainly at cultivating high level official and administrative personnel for Romanian government and has fostered many political leaders in Romania. The institute is dedicated to develop the fields of political management, international relations and media.

 

The National School of Political Studies and Public Administration plays a key role in educating professional elites for the governmental structures, for the specific structures of the Romanian political system and public administration as well as the public and private management. NSPSPA aims at training highly qualified specialists who will elaborate and manage public policies within state institutions, will develop and study the country’s international relations, will be business and growth leaders in private companies, including multinationals, will perform professionally in rapidly growing fields such as communication, public relations, advertising, and human resources.
