Hishammuddin Hussein, Malaysian Minister of Defence, visits PKU

Peking University, April 24 2017: On April 22, 2017, Hishammuddin Hussein, Minister of Defence, Malaysia, paid a visit to Peking University with his delegation. He was welcomed by PKU Council Chairman Hao Ping, Vice President Li Yansong, and other school leaders.

Besides the warm welcome, Hao Ping recalled his visits to Malaysia and previous talks with Hishammuddin. Hishammuddin expressed his hope for academic exchanges and cooperation between Peking University and Malaysian institutes of higher education, such as the National Defence University of Malaysia, which is run by the Ministry of Defence. He would strive for further communication between students of both sides. Hao noted that Malaysia played an important role in ASEAN (the Association of Southern Asian Nations). With co-existing Malay, Islamic, Chinese and Hindu populations, Malaysia had a diversified culture, which gives it a significant advantage in cultural communication. Hao also introduced the “One Belt, One Road” initiatives and Southeast Asian Studies in PKU, and suggested establishing a Malaysia Research Center for deeper research. He then invited Hishammuddin to support Malaysian research and Southeast Asian Studies in PKU. In response, Hishammuddin expressed his appreciation for traditional Chinese culture and his wish for cooperation with PKU on a larger scale.

Then Panglima, vice president of National Defence University of Malaysia and PKU Vice President Li Yansong signed a memorandum of understanding on academic exchanges between the two schools.
