2017 International Conference on China Urban Development held in London

Peking University, May 18, 2017: The 2017 International Conference on China Urban Development was held on May 5th to 6th in London. The conference is organized by University College London and co-organized by College of Urban, and Environmental Sciences, Peking University, and Lincoln Institute Center for Urban Development and Land Policy, Peking University.

 ‘The International Conference on China Urban Development’ was launched in 2010 and after several years of development, it has become an important international platform to promote interdisciplinary studies and share research experience and findings on the issues of urbanization and urban transformation in China. After a period of rapid economic growth, China has entered a new era of slow growth. China is facing challenges of new-type urbanization and the governance of cities. Under the background of globalization, the study of urban problems in China is of great significance to improve the theoretical system of the discipline of urban and rural planning.

This conference aimed to talk about the challenges of urbanization and the governance of Chinese cities and offered an opportunity for researchers that focus on the sustainable development of urbanization and profound urban transformation to discuss, and communicate with each other. And also, it was to provide a platform to carry out comparative urban studies among cities in China and other countries. More than 300 experts and scholars from Peking University, University of California, Berkeley, University College London, Hong Kong University, and other international renowned universities attended the meeting.


 
Professor Yang Kaizhong, secretary-general of Peking University, He Canfei, dean of College of Urban, and Environmental Sciences, Lin Jian, dean of Department of Urban and Regional Planning and Zhi Liu, director of the Lincoln Institute’s China program and a score of scholars also attended the meeting.
The conference was sponsored by International Journal of Urban and Regional Research (IJURR) and Urban Studies, two of the leading Anglophone outlets for urban China research. Two plenary series were held during the conference.

Professor Jennifer Robinson from UCL Geography delivered the opening keynote speech titled ‘thinking London from China’, whilst Professor You-tien Hsing from University of California, Berkeley concluded the conference on a high note with her Urban Studies closing keynote speech centered on the land-centered urban question in China’s agrarian transformation.

During the two conferences, 12 experts in the area of China’s cities shared their opinions and expectations to the future research in this field. Professor He Canfei gave a talk entitled ‘How to Upgrade Industries in Chinese Cities’. Professor Liu Zhijun delivered a welcoming speech at the opening ceremony. Researcher Zhao Pengjun, associate professor Dai Linlin, gave a report on development of informal community in urban and reconstruction and transformation of rural areas respectively in the penal meeting. Part of the outcome of this meeting will be published in the Special Issue of Urban Studies, ‘New Directions for Chinese Urban Studies’.

Peking University and UCL will continue to promote the construction of all-round, multi-level and interdisciplinary bilateral communication platform, further promote exchange and cooperation between universities in China and Britain, and provide new international ideas and directions to solve problems in urban of China.
