Peking University attends the 10th China-Japan University Presidents Forum

Peking University, Oct.27, 2017: From October 20 to 21, 2017, the 10th China-Japan University Presidents Forum was held in Shenyang. This year, the topic of the forum is “The Development of Chinese and Japanese Universities: Opportunity, Challenge, and Future”. Gong Qihuang, vice president of Peking University, and Haneda Masashi, vice president of the University of Tokyo, jointly hosted the opening ceremony. 

This time, the forum was mainly organized by Northeastern University. Participating entities span 18 Chinese universities including Peking University, Tsinghua University and Fudan University; 19 Japanese universities including the University of Tokyo, Kyoto University, and Waseda University; and 7 government organizations or academic institutions, including the China Scholarship Council, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan, the Embassy of Japan in China, and the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science.

During the opening ceremony, speeches were delivered respectively by Matsuo Hiroki, the chief cabinet secretary of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan; Ren Zhongyuan, director of the Foreign Affairs Office of Liaoning Province; Chen Gang, vice deputy director-general of the Education Department of Liaoning Province; and Ishizuka Hideki, the  Consulate-General of Japan in Shenyang.

During the conference for presidents, the representatives from China and Japan mainly focused on the future of advanced education in the two countries. They also exchanged their opinions on “innovation and revolution of the model of advanced education” and “how to teach college students to face future career challenges”, which provoked heated debate.

In the student forum, around 40 students from China and Japan discussed several hot topics such as artificial intelligence and innovation. Yao Siyu, from the School of Electronics Engineering and Computer Science, attended the meeting as the representative of Peking University.

Gong Qihuang, vice president of Peking University, was present at the conference the whole day and delivered a speech at the dinner party. He attributed the success of this forum to the cooperation between Chinese and Japanese universities, which also plays an important part in the harmonious state of Sino-Japanese relations.

The China-Japan University Presidents Forum was initiated jointly by Peking University and the University of Tokyo. This year marks the 45th anniversary of the normalization of Sino-Japanese relations, as well as the 17th year since the forum’s creation. In the near future, the 11th Forum will be held in Waseda University, Japan, in which we have faith to continue our progress.
