EU Ambassador to China lectures upon EU-China economic relations
Dec 13, 2017
Peking University, Dec. 4, 2017: On the morning of December 4, 2017, Dr. Hans Dietmar Schweisgut, Ambassador for the European Union to China, delivered a lecture on the prospects of EU-China economic relations at the School of Economics, Peking University. This was the second lecture held under the theme of “Chinese Economy in the eyes of foreign ambassadors to China.” These lectures are part of a series of events celebrating the 105th anniversary of the founding of the School of Economics.

Professor Sun Qixiang, Dean of the School of Economics, opened the lecture with a warm welcome to Ambassador Schweisgut as well as all the attendees present. She noted that the European Union had always been an important business partner to China since the formal establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the European Communities 42 years ago. Sun also pointed out that, while there were bilateral difficulties in the past, EU-China economic achievements have worked out well because both sides put forth every effort to promote mutual trade and investment. Sun appealed to both China and the EU to cooperate and communicate more in the future so as to contribute more effectively to world peace.

Ambassador Schweisgut then delivered a keynote speech in which he explained how the global economy affected EU-China relations. He highlighted how trade and the economy were interrelated and how opportunities and challenges confronted countries around the world. In addition to acknowledging Dean Sun’s remarks regarding economic growth in China and the collaboration with European countries, he analyzed the economic status quo in central Europe as a result of the Global Financial Crisis in 2008. He also expressed concerns about various social problems, including regional conflicts, terrorism, the migrant crisis and poverty. Schweisgut discussed how it was necessary for countries to work with each other in reforming and investing, as was suggested by Chinese President Xi Jinping, in order to overcome difficulties, to expand international investment, and to create a “win-win” situation.

Students and others in attendance later raised questions concerning EU-China cooperation and other topics touched on during the keynote speech. Ambassador Schweisgut answered all the questions with great patience. When it came to the European migrant crisis, he emphasized that the crisis would not be defused by a country or region single-handedly.
