Guests from the Israel Council for Higher Education Visits Peking University

Peking University, Dec. 23, 2017: Yaffa Zilbershats, Chairman of the Planning and Budgeting Committee of the Israel Council for Higher Education, visited Peking University with a delegation on the afternoon of Dec. 19, 2017. They were welcomed at Linhuxuan by a group of representatives including Tian Gang, vice president of Peking University; Deng Xingwang, dean of the School of Advanced Agricultural Sciences (under development); Xu Zheping, vice professor of the Institution of Hebrew and Jewish Studies; and Gu Xue, assistant director of the Office of International Relations.

Tian Gang introduced Peking University’s history and current projects to Zilbershats, and expressed his hopes for future collaboration on research of the regions and countries along the Belt and Road. Peking University has also been looking forward to strengthen its relationships with Israeli universities and the Israel Council for Higher Education.

Yaffa Zilbershats expressed her appreciation the warm welcome from PKU. She then elaborated on the functions and details of the Israel Council for Higher Education. Zilbershats also hoped that there would be more exchange programs between Chinese and Israeli colleges in order to foster mutual understanding between students of both countries.

Deng Xingwang mentioned that the developing PKU School of Advanced Agricultural Sciences and the Tel Aviv University’s School of Life Sciences have jointly established the Peking University-Tel Aviv University Agriculture and Food Security Research Center. Meanwhile, Peking University, Tel Aviv University, and the People’s Government of Weifang city have established tripartite plans for the construction of an Institution of Agriculture, which marks joint efforts from both China and Israel.

Professor Xu Zheping also introduced that Peking University was the first Chinese University to set up a Department of Hebrew. Until now, a great number of students from the Department of Hebrew have pursued further studies in Israel.

After the conference, both sides continued to exchange more remarks on the promising cooperation between Chinese and Israeli colleges.
