Peking University, Oct. 15, 2018: From Oct. 8 to Oct. 10, Margaret Leinen, vice chancellor of University of California, San Diego, and director of Scripps Institution of oceanography, visited Peking University at the invitation of Professor Zhu Tong, dean of College of Environmental Sciences and Engineering, Peking University. As a specialist in paleoceanography and paleoecology, she has been awarded so many prizes in fields of marine science, global climate and environment issues. This time, Professor Margaret Leinen hoped to further facilitate the communication and cooperation between Peking University and University of California, San Diego, Scripps Institution of oceanography.
On Oct. 9, Professor Margaret Leinen attended the symposium themed on “How to Succeed as a Female Scientist/Administrator”. More than 30 female representatives from College of Environmental Sciences and Engineering, School of Physics, Institute of Ocean Research, and other departments of Peking University attended the symposium. First of all, Professor Margaret Leinen mentioned that as the development of society and people’s cognition, the conception of gender has been weakened. Therefore, females should actively break through the limitation of using femininity as self-definition. Additionally, the definition of success is not fixed. She considered that achieving goals by working hard just means success. She encouraged new female recruits to communicate bravely, adapt initiatively to the new environment, and all the females to discover their potential of leadership.

On the afternoon of Oct. 9, Professor Margaret Leinen’s lecture “US Geoscience and International Partnerships” was held by College of Environmental Sciences and Engineering and Institute of Ocean Research jointly. The lecture was hosted by Zheng Mei, vice dean of Institute of Ocean Research. During the lecture, Margaret Leinen emphasized that international partnerships had been consistently playing an extremely crucial role in the field of geoscience research, and that global data-sharing highly benefited the development of global science researches. What’s more, Professor Margaret Leinen also introduced the top ten trends of science development putting forward by American Geophysical Union (AGU), including realizing globalization of science and talent pool, increasing cooperation between international institutions, and etc.

On the morning of Oct. 10, Professor Margaret Leinen attended the symposium with Zhu Tong, dean of College of Environmental Sciences and Engineering, Zhang Lifei, dean of School of Earth and Space Sciences, and other representatives from Peking University. The two sides introduced separately their own present situation of international communication between students and faculties, and reached a consensus of facilitating the mutual cooperation.

After the symposium, Tian Gang, vice president of Peking University met with Professor Margaret Leinen. The two sides discussed the cooperation between the two universities and hoped to enhance communication and cooperation in the future.
