[PKU International Culture Festival 2018] A Closer Look at the French and Spanish Booths
Oct 23, 2018
Peking University, Oct 22, 2018: October 21 could have been a dull and cold Sunday, announcing the beginning of a long and harsh winter. This was maybe true everywhere else in China, but definitely not at Peking University where the 15th Peking University International Cultural Festival officially opened on the plaza of Peking University Hall.

The theme of this year’s event is “PKU and You: 120 Years and Beyond.” Foreign embassies in Beijing, PKU international students from more than 60 countries and regions in the world, along with Chinese student volunteers participated in the event.

Among above 60 booths promoting themselves to thousands of visitors, the French booth and the Spanish booth are two of the most popular ones.

The Volunteer team at the French boost consist of French natives, Chinese students majoring French, and other Chinese students interested in French culture. Around the walls of the French booths hung pictures telling visitors more about France, including the "Fete de la Musique (summer solstice festival),” world-renowned sculptors such as Rodin and Antoine Bourdelle, the contemporary movie star and singer Sophie Marceau and first-class French brands such as Chanel and Celine. The volunteers also prepared croissants and Baguettes for visitors to have a “bite” of the charming French flavors.

While the French boost features the long history, glamorous arts and elegant fashions, the Spanish booth seems more easy-going and vigorous. In the midst of passionate Flamenco, volunteers at the Spanish boost are busy doing game quizzes with visitors. Volunteers ask visitors questions with national characteristics like “Is Spain a kingdom or a republic?” “Name three Spanish football teams.” “Name the main ingredients of paella”, and if the answers are correct, the visitor can taste the delicate dessert brought by the volunteer team—a snack composed of bread, olive oil and chorizo sausages.

The successful promotion the two booths in a stimulating and pleasant atmosphere is not only reflected in the great smile of the thousands of visitors, but also in their guestbook where visitors could leave comments. Their guestbooks are full of touching comments or sincere appraisals.
