Peking University to collaborate with University of Catania in environmental and chemical sciences

Peking University, Dec. 14, 2018: From November 6 to 9, 2018, Professor Zhu Tong, dean of the College of Environmental Sciences and Engineering of Peking University, visited the Department of Chemical Sciences of University of Catania (Unict) in Italy and discussed the common development of the two universities and their cooperation opportunities. On November 7, Francesco Basile, president of University of Catania, and Zhu signed a five-year cooperation agreement. The agreement details the collaboration in both educational and scientific areas, including but not limited to the co-organization of academic events, the joint offering of courses, and the sharing of research facilities. Collaboration in publication and funding application is also on the agenda. Roberto Purrello and Enrico Ciliberto, head and director of the Department of Chemical Sciences of Unict, and Enrico Greco, a postdoctoral fellow of PKU College of Environmental Sciences and Engineering, also attended the signing ceremony.

As an invited guest, Zhu Tong gave two special reports, “Respiration Affects Our Health” and “The development in Air Pollution Research in China”. In these reports, Zhu introduced the air pollution situation in China and illustrated the relationship between air pollution and health.

Founded in 1434, University of Catania is one of the oldest universities in Europe. Currently, there are 17 departments and more than 50,000 students in this long-established university. With the excellent research foundation of Unict’s Department of Chemical Sciences in the fields of materials chemistry and environmental sciences, the cooperation between the two universities will not only promote the interdisciplinary integration of emerging materials and environmental conservation but also improve international communication.
