Peking University, Jan. 31, 2019: On January 21, 2019, the International Alliance of Research Universities (IARU) Presidents Annual Meeting (2019) was held at the Federal University of Technology, Zurich, Switzerland. Hao Ping, president of Peking University, and the presidents of 10 other member schools participated in the meeting. The presidents introduced the new trends in the development of higher education in their respective schools and countries, and discussed the issues of talent cultivation in the new era, the new role of the university under the challenge of “reverse globalization”, and the promotion of “lifelong learning”.
At the meeting, Hao Ping introduced Peking University's active participation in the construction of Beijing's "four centers", especially in the construction of "Huairou Science City", and listed achievements of new scientific research institutions such as Beijing Graphene Institute, Beijing Academy of Artificial Intelligence and Chinese Institute for Brain Research, Beijing. He pointed out that Peking University is committed to promoting innovation and upgrading of the industry and improving the level of academic research in practice.

Hao Ping also introduced the new thinking and new ideas of Peking University in terms of personnel training. He pointed out that in the face of the new challenges brought about by the "fourth industrial revolution", Peking University will strive to cultivate students' ability of lifelong learning, from "learning knowledge" to "learning how to learn", and enhancing students' sense of innovation. Students will have a more comprehensive knowledge background and a spirit of openness, tolerance and collaboration, which enable students to have a stronger humanistic spirit and humanistic care, consciously serve the country and the people, and actively participate in international organizations.
The Meeting
During his stay in Switzerland, Hao Ping will also participate in the "Global University Leaders Forum" (GULF) and meet with the chairman of the World Economic Forum in Davos.
