PKU Council Chairman Qiu Shuiping meeting with Dr. Goetze

This was the first visit Dr. Goetze paid to PKU after he took office as the German ambassador to China in September last year. He expressed his gratitude to PKU’s warm invitation and pointed out that PKU’s beautiful campus, lively atmosphere, and large quantities of talent were all that made him impressive. He also stated that China and Germany should focus on the exchanges in economy and politics, and also in education and scientific research. Besides, he admired the economic success China has achieved since the Reform and Opening up and the great efforts PKU’s teachers and students put into the development of China.

Meanwhile, Qiu Shuiping addressed that PKU had a close relationship with Germany and attached great importance to the communication and cooperation with Germany all the time. Also, Qiu hoped that PKU could improve cooperation in scientific research and students’ exchanges with Germany.

The topic of Dr. Goetze’s presentation was “Germany and China in the fifth decade of China’s Reform and Opening-Up”. Dr. Goetze gave his presentation from different parts. First, he recalled the long-lasting relationship between China and Germany in the history and stated that this kind of relationship has developed fast since the Reform and Opening-Up. China has become the largest trade partner of Germany for three years, while Germany is the most important trade partner of China in Europe. Since there are more uncertainties of the international world, Germany and China should strengthen their partnership, which would promote further development of the two countries.
