PKU hosts the 3rd IEEE International Workshop on Future Computing

Peking University, Dec. 19, 2019: From December 14 to 15, the 3rd IEEE International Workshop on Future Computing (IWOFC) was held in Hangzhou. The workshop was co-hosted by Peking University and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). Themed “Neuromorphic Engineering and Quantum Computing”, the workshop attracted over 300 attendees. More than 30 experts and scholars across the world were invited to give speeches and presentations.

First held in 2017, the event has been hosted for three consecutive years. Huang Ru, member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and assistant to president of Peking University, chaired the workshop.

Huang Ru gave an introduction about the theme, development and aspiration of IWOFC. She reminded the participants of both the prosperity of brain-inspired computing research and the challenges it faces. She then briefly reviewed the important trends and key issues in this field, and hoped that the forum would provide new inspirations for relevant research. She further observed that significant breakthroughs could be made by promoting basic research and facilitating interdisciplinary collaboration.

Professor R. Stanley Williams from Texas A&M University, Dr. Maud Vinet from CEA-Leti (Laboratory of Electronics Information Technology), and some other 30 experts from all over the world delivered reports at the workshop. They shared opinions on the cutting-edge and heated topics. During the roundtable session on the afternoon of December 15, participants had in-depth discussions about brain-inspired computing, quantum computing and so forth. Apart from the speeches, 38 academic posters were displayed at the event, and six were elected as the “best posters”.

IWOFC has provided a beneficial platform for academic exchanges. At the conference, many renowned scholars exchanged their insightful ideas and explored various innovative research approaches, thus promoting the future development of computing technology.
