Professor Zhong Jikun awarded Wang Zuoliang Award for Foreign Literature Research

Peking University, May 11, 2021: The Awarding Ceremony of the second Wang Zuoliang Award for Foreign Literature Research was held recently. Zhong Jikun, late professor from the Department of Arabic Language and Culture, School of Foreign Languages, Peking University, won the first prize for his work titled History of Arabic Literature (four volumes).

Professor Jin Li, president of Wang Zuoliang Higher Institute of Foreign Literature and chair of the award committee was in charge of reviewing the selected work. According to Jin, 60 experts selected 16 works in the preliminary evaluation for the second round of selection. Among them, eight entered the final round to participate in the final round of voting. Professor Zhong Jikun’s History of Arab Literature emerged as one of the first prize award-winning literature research books.

Liu Guangmin, wife of Professor Zhong, accepted the award on behalf of him. In her address, she said the History of Arabic Literature is the most important work of Professor Zhong. She recalled Professor Zhong’s affection with poetry, recitation, translation and academic research, and revealed that Professor Zhong could even recite his translation of the Arabic poem “Song of the Flower” by Kahlil Gibran.

Throughout the years, Professor Zhong has been highly recognized for his outstanding contributions to filling the translation gap of Arabic literature in China and bridging communications between the two cultures. In 2018, he was also awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award in Translation, China’s most prestigious prize in translation,
