Professor Lv Zhi wins Compassion Award

Peking University, September 7, 2021: Professor Lv Zhi from Peking University School of Life Sciences received the 16th Compassion Award, the largest public welfare award in the scale of global Chinese philanthrophy.

The Compassion Award was founded in 2006 by Hong Kong and Macau Taiwanese Charity Fund Ltd  with the aim of enhancing positive energy in society by promoting positive role models of compassion. The 8 award recipients this year were selected from 15 finalists, by 29 judges from Chinese mainland, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau, in recognition of their innovative thoughts, excellent leadership, and persistent commitment to charity. The award ceremony is expected in mid-December, 2021.

Professor Lv Zhi is awarded the Compassion Award for her advocating for wildlife, nature and ecology. For all these years, she has been dedicated to the protection and research on endangered wildlife such as giant panda and snow leopard, promoted the establishment of protected areas and the relevant legislation and policy, contributed to the sustainable development of rural areas with ecological diversity in Southwest China, and supported grassroot environmental NGOs to solve climate change and ecological crisis.

Lv Zhi joined School of Life Sciences of Peking University in 1992 and became a professor in 2002. She established Shan Shui Conservation Center in 2007 , and  founded Peking University Center for Nature and Society a year later. Professor Lv Zhi hold concurrent posts as vice director of PKU’s Institute of Ecology and an advisor of UN Decade on Restoration.

Before winning the Compassion Award, Professor Lv Zhi has received the “National Award for Outstanding Contribution to Environmental Protection” from the Ministry of Environmental Protection (the former institution of  Ministry of Ecology and Environmental Protection) and the “Social Service Award” from the China Association for Women Scientists and Technicians.
