PKU's on-the-spot inspection by AAALAC takes place

Peking University, Nov. 25, 2013 : From November 19th to 20th, Dr. Pang Wanyong, Dr.Takashi Agui, and Dr Liu Jin from Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC) reinspected the work of past three years of Peking University (PKU). They received a warm greeting ceremony, attended by PKU administration members and members of Institute of Molecular Medicine.
 
The greeting ceremony commenced with Vice President Gao Song’s speech. He said that PKU always attached great importance to the work related to laboratory animal, and established Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), which was in charge of the inspection and supervision of the welfare and ethics of laboratory animal. In 2007, PKU applied for and acquired the accreditation of AAALAC, by the joint effort of Institute of Molecular Medicine and Laboratory Animal Center. In 2010, PKU passed the reinspection of the first three years’ work, which symbolized that PKU’s management of laboratory animal had reached and maintained high standard which was internationally recognized. In the following three years, a lot of effective work was done by relevant departments and institutes to help steadily raise PKU’s overall level of laboratory animal welfare. At last, Gao expressed gratitude to the instruction and support of AAALAC for a long time, on behalf of PKU. He also mentioned that PKU would, as always, pay attention to the work related to laboratory animal and play a better exemplary role.

Director of Beijing Administration Office of Laboratory Animal Li Genping, Professor Xiong Jingwei from Institute of Molecular Medicine, also made their speeches, on behalf of local administration and the applicant respectively. After the welcoming ceremony, accompanied by members of PKU IACUC, the expert team inspected the equipment of animal breeding, relative laboratories and all kinds of file of the past three years. The expert team fully affirmed PKU’s work related to laboratory animal and would report accurately to International Council of AAALAC. The final result of reinspection would be fed back to PKU in next year’s February.

AAALAC is a private, nonprofit organization that promotes the humane treatment of animals in science through voluntary accreditation and assessment programs. PKU got its full accreditation in 2008, being the first one among Chinese universities and also the only one among the universities in Beijing.
