[Lecture] Quantum-enhanced precision measurement - Witness the "waltz" of Bose condensed atoms

Abstract

Metrology is a science of measurement, which not only provides support for the establishment of standards and units in Science and Technology, but is also of significance in its own research. The accuracy of measurements helps people to understand nature and sets boundaries for the existing laws and theories.

Based on the measurements of independent ensembles, the lower limit for statistical inference of parameters is the classical accuracy limit or the standard quantum limit (SQL). Entangled particles can reduce quantum noise in linear interferometry, and time-reversed quantum interactions can be used to amplify signals in nonlinear interferometry, both of which can show accuracy beyond SQL.
The research of new principles and methods is essential to the measurement of quantum precision. This report will review the research progress made by the speaker at Tsinghua University in recent years.

You Li is currently professor of Tsinghua University, Deputy Director of the Academic Committee of the Department of Physics, Director of the Institute of Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics, Director of the research and innovation platform for mesoscopic optics and cold atoms of the Collaborative Innovation Center for quantum matter science, and Deputy Head of the guidance expert group for the major research plan of “precision measurement physics” of the National Natural Science Foundation.

He has long been engaged in the research of atomic physics, quantum gas, quantum optics, quantum information and quantum computing. He presided over the cooperative Research Fund for overseas and Hong Kong and Macao scholars of the National Natural Science Foundation, the National major scientific research plan in quantum regulation research, and the key project of quantum regulation and quantum information in the National key research and development plan. His research result, “preparation of multi-particle entangled states by using quantum phase transition certainty”, was selected as the top ten scientific progress in China in 2017. He has won the NSF Career Award (1997), the ONR Young Investigator Program Award (1997), and the first prize for papers of the Gravity Research Foundation (2013). He was elected to major Talent Program of the National and Ministry of Education, and was chosen as APS Fellows in 2007.
