Abstract:

To reduce the environmental and climate impact of combustion in engines, there is an incentive to replace conventional transport fuels (Diesel, heavy fuel oil) with alternative fuels such as natural gas, LPG, alcohols, or even ammonia. To guarantee safe and efficient operation of engines, insight in the autoignition and flame properties of these fuel alternatives at high pressure is required. Characterization of chemistry at high pressures is challenging, however, both experimentally and theoretically. In this presentation, it is discussed how our knowledge of the high pressure oxidation chemistry for simple hydrocarbons, alcohols, and amines is advanced through a close interaction between experimental work, chemical kinetic modeling, and high level theory. Special emphasis is put on the pre-ignition chemistry, which is studied in specially designed high-pressure flow reactors. The improved knowledge of the high pressure kinetics of combustion allows us to predict with greater confidence ignition, fuel consumption rate, pollutant formation, and safety issues. The practical application of this knowledge will be discussed.

Biography:

Peter Glarborg is Professor of Chemical Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark, where he has taught since 1996.  Peter is an Associate Editor of Combustion and Flame and he was Program Co-Chair for the 36th International Combustion Symposium in Seoul in 2016. Peter has published about 300 research articles in archival journals. He is working broadly in the field of combustion and harmful emission control, with special emphasis on developing detailed reaction mechanisms for high-temperature gas-phase processes.
