Introduction: Open access publishing means research is made freely available for anyone to read. This type of research, which can be downloaded, read and reused under an open license, faces many hurdles, including publication costs, quality control, peer review, predatory journals, etc. In recent years, outputs of archaeological research have increasingly been published open access. This lecture will discuss the trends and main forms of open access publishing in archaeology, explore its impact on research and teaching, and examine the challenges of publishing in an English-speaking environment.

Speaker profile: 


John Olsen retired from UA in 2016 to focus his energies on fieldwork and research. He is a former Head of the UA Department of Anthropology (1998-2008) and is now Executive Director of the Je Tsongkhapa Endowment for Central and Inner Asian Archaeology. He is a Guest Research Fellow at the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology (IVPP) in Beijing (中国科学院古脊椎动物与古人类研究所客座研究员).
