Abstract:
This September, PKU brings the National Theatre Live production of Jane Eyre to campus — screening + pre-show talk by English Dept. chair Prof. Na Hai.

180 years of adaptations. Countless versions of the same love story. This one throws out the romance to ask a different question: what does it actually take to be free? Instead of centering Jane and Rochester's will-they-won't-they, it uses movement and live music to trace one woman's fight for autonomy. The Daily Mail called it "the heartbeat of the novel, captured exactly."

This isn't a one-off. It's part of "World Classics on Stage," a series pairing theater screenings with scholar-led discussions hosted by Asst. Prof. Mao Mingchao — Hamlet, Eugene Onegin, Jekyll & Hyde, and a Chinese-language count of Monte Cristo are all coming up this fall, each introduced by faculty from the relevant language department.
