While the freshmen were exhilarated to begin their journey at PKU, volunteers too enjoyed the rite of initiation. “(Three years ago) I had settled in Yanyuan with the help of my seniors, and I aspired to do the same myself. Since then, I’ve volunteered for freshmen orientations every year, hoping to carry forward the spirit of dedication and benevolence,” wrote Dong Hui, an undergraduate student from Peking University School of Marxism. “Though the volunteering work might take some effort, what I had received in return—those thank-yous and smiles—rendered me with the meaning and spirit of volunteerism.”
Liu Ruiqing, an undergraduate student from the School of Law at Peking University, hoped that by offering a helping hand to the new faces at PKU, she could pass down the special inheritance of kindness to her juniors. “Two years ago, when I walked onto the campus with great expectations, I too was greeted by my solicitous professors and seniors. Now I wished that my doing the same thing could make the newcomers feel at home and help them adapt to college life as soon as possible!” she wrote.
