Peking University, November 11, 2024: ‘Global Perspectives’ - Postgraduate Student Academic Exchange Support Programme, 2024, was introduced by Graduate School of Peking University to serve the national "Belt and Road" initiative (BRI) and to encourage the internationalisation of postgraduate education. Professor Zhai Kun, a distinguished professor on regional and country studies, conducted the "Summer International Research Mission" in Indonesia and Malaysia as part of the program. Twelve multidisciplinary doctoral students from different faculties made up the mission team, which was led by the School of International Studies [CN] and had seven mentors.
With the 50th anniversary of China-Malaysia relations in 2024 and the 75th anniversary of China-Indonesia relations in 2025, the development of China-Malaysia and China-Indonesia relations is at an important juncture. An in-depth study of the two countries will be significant for China in terms of enhancing awareness, promoting cooperation, and deepening ties with Southeast Asian countries.

During their visit to Indonesia, the research mission visited various universities, think tanks, focusing on topics like think tank independence, ASEAN mechanisms, and national politics. They also visited the headquarters of Tokopedia, Indonesia's largest local e-commerce platform, exploring topics such as the company's operational approach for live-streaming e-commerce as well as how digital technology is influencing consumption patterns in Indonesia and spurring economic innovation. The trip also included a strong emphasis on economic cooperation in sectors like digital finance, electric vehicles, and green energy. This is in line with the BRI's objective of promoting economic cooperation and connectivity throughout the area.

In Malaysia, they visited various universities and had discussions on infrastructure cooperation, climate policy, and the role of digital technology in economic development. Discussions with government representatives centered on the growth of data centers and Malaysia's digital economy. To learn more about Malaysia's cultural linkages and economic development under the BRI, the research mission also visited historical monuments and think tanks in the area.

China's diplomatic activities in the region were further emphasized during meetings with the Chinese embassies in both nations.
The research mission found that these exchanges strengthen China's role in Southeast Asia, and they envision this programme to be the starting point for ongoing collaboration with international partners. Through this effort, the group aims to foster deeper understanding and friendly exchange between Chinese and foreign youth, support the development of the BRI, and contribute to global prosperity and stability.
