Peking University, May 3, 2025: As Peking University celebrates its 127th anniversary, the global alumni community is refreshed in their cherished campus memory that continues to shape their lives. This collection of wishes and recollections from international alumni reminds us that the spirit of PKU transcends borders and generations. Through their stories, we honor not only the university's legacy, but also its enduring place in the hearts of those who once called it home.

1. Sarah Brooker(宋晓莉), United States of America
Ph.D. Student, University of Pennsylvania
M.A.'21, Yenching Academy

“I wish PKU another successful 100 years! I learned so much at PKU — I wouldn’t be where I am without it.  I hope that current and future students will continue PKU’s excellence both in and out of the classroom!”

What is your favorite memory at PKU?

My favorite memory at PKU was going to Qufu and Tai’an for a class field trip! I had the opportunity to TA for Professor Lu Yang’s Chinese Classics and Thought class which included this field trip to visit Confucius’ hometown of Qufu and the famous mountain Tai Shan. Not only was this my first time visiting these rich historical sites, but I was able to see in person things we had learned in the classroom. Being at PKU gave me the chance to learn about China no matter where I went!

2. Joseph Olivier Mendo'o(门杜), Republic of Cameroon
Director, International Exchange Department, China-Africa Business Council
Ph.D. '22, School of International Studies

“In the spirit of African proverbs:

‘Knowledge is like a garden; if it is not cultivated, it cannot be harvested.’ For 127 years, Peking University has been the guardian of this garden, where wisdom grows, innovation flourishes, and greatness takes root. Each generation of scholars has tended to this garden, ensuring its bounty endures.

‘A single bracelet does not jingle.’ For 127 years, PKU has been the harmonious symphony of many voices. Its scholars, like beads on a bracelet, have come together to create a melody of knowledge, bridging cultures, and shaping a future where brilliance knows no bounds.

May the garden of PKU's learning continue to thrive, and may its legacy of unity and excellence resonate ever more powerfully. Happy 127th Anniversary to Peking University!”

What is your favorite memory at PKU?

As an African alumnus of PKU, my favorite memory is a blend of academic and social triumphs. In class, I was inspired by my supervisor Dr. Liu Haifang (a.k.a The African Mom) , who always challenged us to think beyond borders. I remember group projects where we tackled global issues, combining our unique perspectives.

Socially, the annual International Cultural Festival was a highlight. I not only shared Cameroonian rich culture, cuisine, and snacks with friends and the PKU community, but it was also a unique opportunity to get better acquainted with cultures from all over the world. It was a perfect blend of learning and connection, a true testament to PKU’s global spirit.

What is your favorite memory at PKU?

I can still feel that morning — the day of my defense, heart racing like the clock’s relentless tick. And that very moment when I’ve heard: ‘Defense passed.’ A simple sentence, yet heavy with the weight of sleepless nights, of books cracked open at dawn, of questions that once felt endless. And in one breath — the weight of a numerous pages turned to wings, the horizon pulling open like a promise. That moment, is forever stitched into the story of who I am.

What is your favorite memory at PKU?

My favorite memory at PKU is wandering alone around Weiming Lake through the seasons. I loved watching the green-headed ducks swim by, the flowers bloom and fade, the trees shift with time. I often sat by the water to read, think, or simply watch the sun set and the stars appear. It was peaceful, grounding, and full of quiet beauty.

What is your favorite memory at PKU?

My favourite memory at Peking University was being among the top ten women in the annual school marathon. I often enjoyed running in the mornings or evenings around Zhongguan Xinyuan Global Village or in Chaoyang Park on weekends, so participating in the marathon and placing in the top ten was a wonderful surprise. I especially loved that my classmates and friends were there, supporting and cheering me on during this memorable achievement.

What is your favorite memory at PKU?

Time flies — I can’t believe it’s already been almost a year since I left PKU. PKU is like my second home, a beautiful, park-like campus. I hope to visit again and spend some time soaking up its spirit whenever I have the chance. I truly cherished my years at PKU (2016–2024), both during my PhD and postdoctoral studies at Langrun Garden. I don’t have one single "best memory" because every day at PKU was a best memory for me. I valued my time there deeply, knowing that it would be short. I had the opportunity to learn everything I was passionate about from outstanding professors, explore advanced theories and ideas, study development experiences, and make full use of resources that few places in the world can offer.

7. Biondi Sanda Sima(周伟棋), Indonesia
Digital Development Consultant, World Bank
M.A.'16, School of International Studies

“I wish the school continued success in attracting and educating the brightest minds from across the region and the world. May the school and its alumni continue to be at the forefront as we shape the future, lead the present, and honor our proud and historic traditions.”

What is your favorite memory at PKU?

One of my favorite memories at PKU was joining a class on ASEAN hosted by Professor Zhai on his office balcony, with just four students. I saw him weekly in class and occasionally on TV, offering his sharp commentary on world affairs. On the last day of our semester, I invited the group to enjoy Rendang at an Indonesian restaurant tucked away in a corner of Beijing. Professor Zhai later became my thesis advisor and a steady supporter throughout my career and life. I don't think I would have achieved as much without his mentorship.

8. Philip Cornelis Fischer(高非), The Netherlands
Investment Banking Analyst, Goldman Sachs (Milan)
'24, Guanghua School of Management

“Your legacy of nurturing bold thinkers, fearless collaborators, and visionary problem-solvers shines within us. May curiosity forever spark innovation here, turning complexity into clarity. Here’s to shaping tomorrow’s leaders—rooted in grit, boundless in ambition!”

What is your favorite memory at PKU?

My favorite PKU memory lies in its vibrant intellectual community. Simple cafeteria meals transformed into dynamic debates on global issues with peers united by curiosity. Professors challenged us to dissect China’s development through critical thinking, cultivating my "PKUtoolkit" — resilience, problem-solving, and comfort with ambiguity. Equally cherished were football team bonds, sweating together on the field built lifelong friendships. These dual forces —rigorous discourse and collaborative spirit — instilled confidence to embrace complexity. PKU shaped me not just through knowledge, but by nurturing courage to reimagine possibilities, a gift I’ll carry forever.
