Peking University, January 29, 2025: Professor Wang Bo, Vice President and Provost of Peking University, led a delegation to visit Hawaii from January 11 to 14, 2025. The delegation attended the Fifth East-West Philanthropists Summit, visited the University of Hawaii, met with Professor Roger T. Ames, Humanities Chair Professor at Peking University and Professor Emeritus at the University of Hawaii, and took part in the activities organized by Peking University Alumni Association of Hawaii.
On January 13, the PKU delegation had an in-depth exchange with the University of Hawaii, meeting with Provost, Dr. Michael S. Bruno, Chief Global Officer, Professor Brent White, and Dean of the College of Arts, Languages and Letters, Professor Peter J. Arnade. In reflection of the fruitful achievements of Peking University and the University of Hawaii in talent cultivation, scientific research collaboration, and academic exchanges, Wang Bo expressed his hope that the two universities will jointly promote educational exchanges and cooperation between China and the United States. In equal measure, the University of Hawaii declared its commitment to work closely with Peking University in a wider range of fields to facilitate mutual development.

The visit also witnessed the opening of the 5th East-West Philanthropists Summit at Jefferson Hall (East-West Center Imin Conference Center) in Hawaii, where Wang Bo delivered a speech. He talked about the mission of Peking University: to pursue truth through academic research, advance societal development through talent nurturing, and carry forward and promote civilization through realizing values and ideals. As exemplified by the support from alumni Fan Jinshi and Mr. Bo Gurui, Peking University has consistently seen its global network of partners and alumni play a key role in cementing its development.
The 5th East-West Philanthropists Summit, co-organized by the Peking University Education Foundation (USA) and the East-West Philanthropy Forum, was funded and supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and other strategic partners. Under the theme of “Philanthropic Empowerment - Joint Innovation - Sustainable Future”, the summit brought together philanthropists, experts from various fields, and board members from prominent foundations across the East and the West. Their discussion focused on the opportunities and challenges in philanthropic cooperation in the contemporary era. Roger T. Ames, Professor of Humanities at Peking University and Vice President of the International Confederation of Confucianism (ICC), delivered a keynote speech titled “The Philosophy of the Family: A New Philosophical Divide”.
