Peking University President Hao Ping awards the title of honorary professor to Akira Fujishima

Peking University, Oct. 24, 2019: On October 15, Peking University held a ceremony to award the title of honorary professor to Akira Fujishima.

At the ceremony, PKU President Hao Ping said that Akira Fujishima, a famous Japanese scientist in the field of electrochemistry and photocatalysis, has cultivated a dazzling array of elites for China and promoted academic exchanges and cooperation with Chinese academia, business circles, particularly with Peking University. Akira Fujishima also won the 2019 Chinese Government Friendship Award on the strength of his contributions to the exchanges and cooperation between China and Japan in science, technology, culture, education and other fields.
Akira Fujishima said many of his Chinese students like Liu Zhongfan, Yao Jiannian, Jiang Lei, were active in academia, making a variety of outstanding achievements. He felt proud when seeing the remarkable academic achievements and research results in industrialization made by Liu Zhongfan, a professor of Peking University in the field of nano carbon materials. Moreover, Fujishima was privileged to be an honorary professor of Peking University and pledged that he would further enhance cooperation in all aspects with Peking University.
Akira Fujishima is a famous Japanese scientist in the field of electrochemistry and photocatalysis and is known as the "father of photocatalysis" in academic circle because of his discovery of Honda-Fujishima effect. In 2003, he was elected as a foreign academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering. He has yielded fruitful results in academic area, made splendid contributions to exchanges and cooperation in science, technology, culture, education and other fields between China and Japan, promoted academic exchanges and research collaboration between China and Japan and attached great importance to cultivating youngsters.
Akira Fujishima has kept a close relationship with Peking University. In 1993, he was employed as a visiting professor of Peking University, making important contributions to the development of the College of Chemistry and Molecular Engineering of Peking University in the fields of physical chemistry and nano carbon materials; in the same year, he led Japanese scholars to organize the first China Japan Bilateral Symposium on Intelligent Electrophotonic Materials and Molecular Electronics at Peking University, which continues to this day and becomes a flagship academic event in this field.
On September 30, 2019, the awarding ceremony of the 2019 Chinese Government Friendship Award was held at the Great Hall of the People. This year, 100 foreign specialists from 31 different countries won this award including Akira Fujishima. The Chinese Government Friendship Award is the highest award set up by the Chinese government for foreign experts who have made outstanding contributions to promoting China’s socialist modernization and the reform and opening-up.
