Peking University, February 5, 2022: Amangeldiyev Sapargeldi, an international student from Turkmenistan, volunteered as a performer in the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics. Before enrolling at PKU, Sapargeldi was invited by his mentor to participate in ice-making research related to the Winter Olympics. Their breakthroughs in CO2 transcritical refrigeration system have applied to the National Speed Skating Oval, setting a eco-friendly model.

Sapargeldi introduced that transcritical carbon dioxide (T-CO2) boasts high quality, low energy consumption and green ice rinks. Besides, the heat generated from the ice-making process can be recycled, which increases the energy management efficiency with integrated cooling and heating. This technology also greatly contributes to China’s long-term target of peaking carbon emissions before 2030 and reaching carbon neutrality in 2060.

"Every time I enter the National Speed Skating Oval, I am very proud to be a student in Professor Zhang’s group," said Sapargeldi with a smile, "because my initial interest in the Winter Olympics budded from the ‘High-Tech Winter Olympics’, and when I was selected as a performer in the opening ceremony, I was very happy and felt really lucky! Representing both my homeland Turkmenistan and PKU youths, I will strive harder to participate in training and contribute to PKU, to China and to my homeland."
