Su Haoran, an undergraduate of PKU School of Basic Medical Sciences, is a volunteer assisting events on venues. He was inspired greatly by the passions and dedication of volunteersof Olympic test events . “Their experience shows the value of volunteering work. To succeed in assisting the test events, they have overcome many difficulties and challenges, both in their studies and schedules – that was meaningful and also what I expected.” Su said there was another episode that deeply impressed him. “Every time when our volunteers heard the National Anthem began, they felt proud of themselves, irrespective of hardness and tiredness in their work.”

Many volunteers were ignited by the warm smiles of their predecessors in the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics. Xu Yi’nuo, a classmate of Su Haoran, was among them. “I was deeply touched by the zest of volunteers of the 2008 Olympics, they sowed the seeds in my heart to be a volunteer like them when I grow up. In 2015, Beijing won the host of 2022 Winter Olympics, which recalled my memory in my youth, so I applied to be a volunteer for this Olympics.”

The “Ice New Generations” will continue to apply their knowledge and professions to facilitate the preparations of the Beijing Winter Olympics. Yu Haoyang, undergraduate of Guanghua School of Management, Peking University, will act as an Olympic Family Assistant (OFA) this time. Being an OFA, one must deal with needs of foreign athletes and handle emergencies, which means he or she must have a good grasp of rink routes, basic events rules and diplomatic protocols. As a distinguished member of PKU Consulting Association, Yu’s good command of English and calmness enabled her to find best solutions for any kind of emergency in the shortest time. Hu Wanying, PhD candidate of the PKU School of Chinese as a Second Language, is adept at communicating with foreigners. She hopes to teach international athletes some simple Chinese during the Olympics as a way to popularize Chinese culture around the globe.
