[Beijing 2022 Olympics] A Journey of "Sparkling Experience"
Mar 08, 2022
Peking University, March 8, 2022: As an effort to contribute to the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games, Peking University (PKU) has dispatched student volunteers, performing in the opening ceremony or serving at various gaming venues. They have already dedicated months to achieving the success of this event. The interviewee for today is Pekinger Vivian Cheng Xi Ming
PKU Student Volunteer Profile
Vivian Cheng Xi Ming is a fourth-year student from Department of Information Management, Peking University. She is active in school work and associations on campus, including Recreation & Sports Student Union, Cantonese Cultural Development Association, and has also served as a program assistant in PKU's Office of International Relations.
Being an event service assistant at the National Aquatics Center curling arena requires Vivian to work outside of the scope of her major, however, with the experiences of volunteer work in the past, she says this is the kind of work she truly enjoys.
Being a volunteer brings an unexpected learning chance
An event service assistant helps audiences register, show people to their seats, answer to their questions and inform them of the Covid-19 protective measures so that the games proceed smoothly. In order to perform this job well, it requires one to be knowledgeable about the games, quick thinking, and sensitive to the demands of the audience. Vivian, however, went above and beyond what was required of her at work. She went the extra step of familiarizing herself with curling, just so she was well prepared in the event an audience member was to ask her the rules of the game.
Vivian has seen a number of audiences come and go from the stadium over the past few days. One audience, in particular, has left a lasting impression on her -- a young audience member who approached her and asked when the competition would end. To Vivian's surprise, he went on asking for the rules of the competition. After her explanation, the young audience member allowed that now that he understood the rules and could finally enjoy the games.

Vivian understands that most sports of ice and snow, despite of their rapidly rising popularity in China, are still relatively new sports to the majority of the population.
“Being able to watch the games on duty is truly a great bonus, and to help the spectators enjoy and appreciate the games as much as I do gives me a sense of accomplishment as a volunteer at the National Aquatics Center.”

To volunteer in the Winter Olympics meant that they have to give up spending Chinese New Year with family and friends. However, she meets many new friends there and the PKU volunteer team is like a big family, often gathering together after their volunteer work to catch up and play table games. For the past few weeks, she has truly enjoyed every minute at the stadium, immersing herself in the lively and dynamic atmosphere of the games.
“I had been looking forward to volunteering at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics in my first year of university.”
Vivian shares that desire starts from 2008 when she was watching the Beijing Olympics with her family. For Vivian, serving in the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics is like a dream come true, and this is truly a once-in-a-lifetime and "sparkling" experience for her and her fellow volunteer friends.
