PKU alum Huang Yonggang elected Fellow of The Royal Society

Peking University, May 13, 2023: The Royal Society has recently announced its list of newly elected fellows, which includes Prof. Huang Yonggang, a chair professor at Northwestern University, a foreign academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), and an alumnus of PKU's Department of Mechanics and Engineering Science.

As a globally renowned expert in solid mechanics, Prof. Huang has gained worldwide recognition for his outstanding contributions to the field. He obtained his bachelor's degree from Peking University in 1984 and his doctorate from Harvard University in 1990. His research interests focus on the mechanics of flexible electronic devices and three-dimensional manufacturing of complex structures. So far, he has published over 500 papers in various journals, including ten in Science and five in Nature.

In recognition of his remarkable contributions to the scientific community, Prof. Huang was elected as a member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts in 2010. He received multiple accolades in 2017, such as becoming an academician of the National Academy of Engineering in February, a foreign academician of the CAS in November, 2017, and an academician of the Academia Europaea. In April 2020, he was consecutively elected as a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Humanities and Sciences.

Founded in 1663, The Royal Society is the world's oldest and only uninterrupted society. Its fellows include renowned scientists such as Newton, Darwin, Maxwell, and Einstein. Since 1915, all of its presidents have been Nobel laureates. Currently, the society consists of over 1600 fellows who are the world's most distinguished scholars.

The Royal Society annually releases its new fellows to honor their lifelong efforts in the fields of science, engineering, and technology. This year, there are only 19 newly-elected foreign fellows from countries such as China, Japan, Finland, and South Africa. Prof. Huang Yonggang's election as a fellow is a testament to his remarkable achievements in the field of solid mechanics and his contributions to the advancement of science and technology.
