Editor’s note: Graduation symbolizes a significant transition, marking the culmination of years of hard work and studious dedication, as one embarks on a fresh chapter in life. To celebrate this graduation season, PKU News has invited graduates to reflect upon their experiences at the University and is publishing a collection of stories under the theme "My PKU Story." For the first installment, let’s hear from Cheah Cheng Kyat, a master’s graduate at the School of International Studies; he hails from Singapore.

Peking University, June 21, 2023: All good things come to an end, just like my time at PKU. I was fortunate to have access to one of China’s best education institutions, learning from and with the brightest in China. My goal for studying at PKU was to develop a greater understanding of Chinese politics and diplomacy, and my professors from PKU’s School of International Studies have certainly been the best group of scholars to help achieve my goals as they displayed sound knowledge and understanding of both Chinese and international affairs.

My peers from the Masters of International Relations (MIR) program have also provided a variety of perspectives and insights across different fields, assisting in the holistic development of my socio-political awareness.

Not everything was smooth sailing during my time at PKU, as I had to manage a new way of doing things and adapt to the local environment, not to mention the days spent recovering in solidarity after catching COVID-19. I struggled academically in the early semesters as I came from a different academic background. These challenges molded me into an even more independent individual, strengthening my ability to adapt and my resolve to learn new knowledge and pursue lifelong learning.

While the pandemic has limited my time in China and PKU, it certainly has not dampened my enthusiasm to learn and experience life in China. As a cat lover, I love how PKU is home to over 60 cats, each more well-fed than the other. Joining the PKU Cat Society became one of the fondest memories I have on campus, as it gave me the opportunity to mingle with the cutest felines and also the opportunity to socialize with fellow cat lovers.

Time with my peers has also been great as we went on adventures together, exercise, and tried out many of the delicacies Beijing could offer. Outside of PKU, I have traveled alone to over 60 cities and regions in China, including inland regions like Altay and Hotan in Xinjiang and Ganze in Sichuan Province during my time in China. My time exploring China has exposed me to the beauty of cultural diversity here in China and the breathtaking views Nature could offer.

A new door opens as the old one shuts. Though my time at PKU has concluded, my life with PKU has just begun. The opportunity to be employed in a reputable state-own enterprise in China will allow me to carry on the PKU spirit as an alumnus as I further my career, holding on to the dearest memories and connections forged in PKU while I continue to upgrade myself and dedicate myself to lifelong learning.

For those who are reading, I preach this Chinese saying to you, “读万卷书不如行万里路,行万里路不如阅人无数,” which I interpret as “It is important to not only obtain knowledge from books but also to see the world for yourself and to meet with people from different background, especially if you are someone committed to lifelong learning.” Humility and open-mindedness are the two most important traits for someone, and I shall continue upholding these values moving forward. Here’s to an eternity of lifelong learning, greater prosperity, and understanding among mankind. Cheers and onward to a meaningful life of lifelong learning. Happy graduation! 毕业了!
