Professor Zhou Yanheng Team Reveals Stem Cells Mediate Bone Metabolism
Jul 02, 2018
Peking University, June 29, 2018: Nature Communications has recently published online the research by Professor Zhou Yanheng’s team from Peking University Hospital of Stomatology titled “Tet1 and Tet2 maintain mesenchymal stem cell homeostasis via demethylation of the P2rX7 promoter”. The study reported the functional role of Tet1 and Tet2, two of DAN demethylases, in maintaining bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMMSC) properties and bone homeostasis and indicated DNA demethylation abnormity was a key factor in osteoporosis and bone metabolism abnormity.

The team published a paper in Immunity three years ago revealing a new mechanism of Tet1 and Tet2 participating in the regulation of T-cell and immunity homeostasis. Based on that study, the present research clarified for the first time that Tet1 and Tet2 maintained BMMSC, bone homeostasis and osteoanagenesis, which provided new thoughts and potential targets for effective prevention of osteoporosis and controlling diseases related with stem cell metabolism abnormity, and new thoughts for clinical therapies for craniofacial bone loss.
