Peking University, March 18, 2025: Recently, China National Opera House performed the world-class opera “La Dame aux Camélias” on Feb. 28 and Mar. 1 at the PKU Hall to celebrate its 25th anniversary. The sopranos You Hongfei and Guo Chengcheng, in their portrayal of Marguerite, conveyed the ardent love and the harsh turns of destiny; the tenors Xu Sen and Han Junyu, playing Armand, depicted the discrepancy between ideals and reality.
On stage, fervent love unfolded to the music, and the benignity and wickedness of human nature were revealed. The collision between love and prejudice was unveiled from the revelry at the ball to the farewell before the sickbed, each act embodying an exploration of humanity and dignity.
The special performance of “La Dame aux Camélias” at Peking University was yet another testament to the university’s collaboration with the China National Opera House in cultural promotion, marking the commencement of the 25th anniversary series of events for the PKU Hall. Beyond live performances, the hall brought students to the backstage with the consent of the China National Opera House, allowing them to fully appreciate the masterpiece from a behind-the-scenes perspective.
When the curtains were pulled down, the applause continued unabated, and the audience were still immersed in the sensational melodies and captivating storyline of the performance.
