Peking University, January 13, 2026: Despite the cold and blustery weather, PKUers turned out in crowds for the fourth Peking University Winter Games held on the frozen Weiming Lake on the morning of January 11, ending the semester on its very last day with merriment and verve.
In the spirit of popularizing winter sports, the Winter Games have blended fun with competition by introducing novelty programs designed for amateurs yet incorporating professional elements, promoting sportsmanship in a safe and cheerful environment.
The programs included curling on a canvas, bicycle racing with fall-proof bikes, snow tube racing, and hockey puck shooting. The highlight of the event definitely fell on the exhilarating exhibition hockey match and the four beautiful figure skating dances performed by students after the opening ceremony.
“I felt it was very interesting,” said Jiang Dabao, fresh out of the puck shooting competition. “It is my first time skating on the Weiming Lake and beside the Boya Pagoda, and it is a memorable experience.”
The class of 2025 PHBS alumnus also said that he had been doing winter sports like skiing and ice skating ever since his interest was piqued by the Beijing Winter Olympics in 2022, and he expected to participate in more winter sports programs at his alma mater in the future.
The same spirit was echoed by Li Kairui, a sophomore at the School of Mathematical Sciences, who also competed in hockey puck shooting. “This is my first time ice skating and I love it!”
He expressed that since he did not have much access to winter sports facilities in his hometown in Henan, the novelty to him was striking and very fun. “I plan to learn more about winter sports at PKU and continue to have fun doing it.”
After the competition, the participants were each presented with an award certificate and a little horse plushy, a nod to the zodiac sign of this year.
Warming the winter breeze with communal enthusiasm, the Winter Games successfully showcased the charm of winter sports to a wider audience and reinforced the school spirit of building a well-rounded character through sports participation.
