Peking University, Dec. 6, 2012: The one, who makes great contributions to the welfare of the mankind, should be acknowledged by people. International Society of Nephrology (ISN) lately announced Professor Wang Haiyan, Division of Nephrology, Peking University Hospital, the winner of the 1st ISN Pioneer Awards on account of her decades of excellent work in the field of Nephrology. The awarding ceremony will be held at the ISN annual meeting in Hong Kong in 2013, and the winners’ names will be on permanent display on ISN’s official website.
The first ISN Pioneer Awards is for the year 2013, to reward scholars worldwide who have made remarkable achievements in various branches of nephrology. The winners need to go through the procedure of being first nominated by the ISN Global Outreach GO Regional Committees, then assessed by the organization’s core committee, and ranked by the ISN executive committee at last.
Professor John Feehaly, President of the International Society of Nephrology, and Professor William Couser, President of ISN Global Outreach GO Regional Committees, sent Professor Wang a letter of congratulation, praising her to be “The Mother of Chinese Nephrology”. They spoke highly of her efforts and success in increasing the therapeutic level of nephrology in China, which could be taken as an excellent example for other developing countries.
The Award is both an acknowledgement to Wang’s achievements in Nephrology and an affirmation for the work of the medical group led by Professor Wang in Peking University Hospital.

The International Society of Nephrology is an international body representing specialists in nephrology (kidney diseases). Its headquarters are located in Brussels, Belgium.
The society publishes two medical journals: Kidney International and Nature Clinical Practice Nephrology. In 1997 the society formed a task force to provide emergency dialysis services in areas struck by disasters (usually earthquakes), where numerous victims may develop acute renal failure due to crush syndrome. Supported by Médecins Sans Frontières, industry sponsors and professional associations, the Renal Disaster Relief Task Force sends renal nurses, technicians and doctors to the affected area. Since its establishment, it has assisted in a number of major earthquakes in several countries. The current leadership of the ISN includes John Feehally (president), Adeera Levin (secretary general), Victor Schuster (treasurer), Giuseppe Remuzzi (president elect) and Luca Segantini (executive director).
