PKU team’s medical research selected as Major Medical Achievement of China

Peking University, April 27, 2022: On April 17, 2022, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences (CAMS) released the Major Medical Achievements of China in the 21st Century at the China Medical Development Conference. It focuses on the major medical and health achievements with significant scientific, technical, economic, social and cultural values since 2000. The report selected the research outcomes collaborated by the team led by academician Qiao Jie of PKU Third Hospital, and the team of Xiaoliang Sunney Xie and Tang Fuchou from PKU Biomedical Pioneering Innovation Center(BIOPIC).
The researchers first revealed the mechanism of gene expression and epigenetic regulation during human reproductive development and completely mapped the high-precision single-cell transcriptome and epigenetic dynamic change map of human germ cells and early embryos. Also, they have completed the world’s first high-precision whole-genome sequencing of human single oocyte through the Single-cell Genome Amplification technology, and successfully delivered the first IVF baby with high-throughput sequencing and screening of single-gene genetic diseases and chromosome abnormalities. The outcomes have overcome the major reproductive health problem of birth defects. This groundbreaking research has improved China's preimplantation genetic diagnosis(PGD) and promotes the development of reproductive health research in China.
The inclusion of the outcomes is a timely gift for the 110th anniversary of the PKU Health Science Center (PKUHSC), and also a fabulous model of fusing clinical medicine with other discplines. This journey began from Professor Zhang Lizhu where she integrated obstetrics and gynecology to deliver the first IVF baby in the Chinese mainland while Academician Qiao Jie and her research team has brought this technology to greater heights.
