Peking Univerisity, June 19, 2022: On the morning of June 18, the 2022 PKU Graduation Ceremony for postgraduates was held at the May 4th Playground. This ceremony was attended by 5759 postgraduates from the class of 2022 and 117 from the class of 2020, who missed their graduation ceremony in 2020 because of the sudden covid-19 outbreak. This ceremony was broadcast live so that students and parents who were unable to attend could watch it online.



Prior to the ceremony, a series of performances warmed up the audience. PKU Chinese Orchestra played the traditional Chinese drums, and PKU Symphony Orchestra offered a section of Pomp and Circumstance Military Marches. Members of PKU Fenglei Hip Hop Club presented a street dance named "Our Light Years", and PKU Dance Group danced to a piece of traditional Chinese music. A few students and faculty members sang several popular songs about graduation, along with which the audience sang and swayed.








After the warm-up shows, the audience was presented with a video, which reviewed the highlights of Peking University in the past few years and documented the social engagements of the PKU postgraduate class of 2022. For example, their voluntary participation in the 2022 Beijing Olympic Winter Games, and their efforts to help with Covid-19 prevention and control. This video was an expression of gratitude to the students who took the responsibility to make our society a better place.


The ceremony was presided by Professor Gong Qihuang, president of Peking University.

PKU Executive Vice President Qiao Jie, a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, announced the list of "excellent students", which were students who graduated with distinction. 1033 postgraduates were awarded "Excellent Graduates of Peking University in 2022", and 332 postgraduates won the honor of the "Excellent Graduates of Beijing's Higher Education Institutions in 2022". 99 dissertations were nominated as outstanding doctoral thesis. Students who achieved these honors went on stage to collect their prizes from school leaders and their teachers.





Zhou Hong, postgraduate student from the School of Journalism and Communication, delivered a speech on behalf of all postgraduate students. She shared her understanding of being an "ordinary person", suggesting that we should face up to our ordinariness and embrace it. While embracing ourselves, it is important to keep improving ourselves until we have the opportunity to showcase our talent. Zhou Hong also suggested that we could transcend our ordinariness by devoting ourselves to extraordinary causes.

Wang Dingyu, doctoral student from Peking University Third Hospital, shared his personal experiences as a medical student, and drew comparisons between inter-personal relationships with the joints of our bodies. He used his own example to emphasize the fact that human beings could always find his or her value in interactions with other people.



Zhu Tong, professor from College of Environmental Sciences and Engineeringand member of Chinese Academy of Sciences, has ascended Mount Everest for several times to conduct research investigations. In his speech, he said achieving a goal in our life was like conquering a mountain. He said we need curiosity and perseverance to conquer the mountains of our life, and he reminded us to never forget being kind to others and ourselves.


Li Di, who admitted into Peking University in 1990, made a powerful speech on behalf of the alumni of Peking University. Li is the Chief Scientist of The Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope (FAST) project and that of the radio division of National Astronomical Observatories, Chinese Academy of Sciences (NAOC). His team detected the first new pulsar and obtained the largest FRB pulse set in the world to date. Li recounted his experiences in scientific research, recollected the devoting efforts made by his predecessors and his peers, and encouraged PKU students to make their own achievement.


After watching a video which conveyed some professors' blessings and wishes to the graduates, Chair of PKU Council Hao Ping gave a speech. He first expressed his regret that the covid-19 pandemic has deeply affected our lives, and said that hardship molds us into better versions of ourselves. He urged the students to keep patient and hold on in the face of adversity. As chairman of the academic degree evaluation committee, Hao Ping solemnly declared that Peking University decided to award doctor's degree to 2242 students and master's degree to 6011 students this year.


President Gong Qihuang, a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, has studied and worked at Peking University for over 40 years. He hoped PKU graduates can cope with difficulties in their lives with what they have learned in PKU, and encouraged them to make contributions to our society.


The ceremony ended in the chorus of "My Love for Yanyuan Garden", a song composed by Zhou Baoping and Meng Weidong in 1952 to celebrate the relocation of Peking University in Yanyuan from the previous Yenching campus. After the ceremony, graduates lingered on the playground, taking photos with their friends and teachers.
