Prof. Jin Zhijun elected foreign academician of Russian Academy of Sciences

Peking University, June 23, 2022: On June 2, 2022, Professor Jin Zhijun of Peking University (PKU) Institute of Energy was elected as an academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS). He was part of 48 newly elected foreign academicians, 7 of which are from China in recognition of their scientific achievements and outstanding contributions to their respective fields.

RAS is the highest scientific institution in Russia. Founded in St. Petersburg in 1724, it enjoys a long history of high academic reputation. Since the founding of the People’s Republic of China, 10 Chinese scientists have been accorded the title of RAS academician, including Li Siguang, Zhou Guangzhao, and Guo Moruo.
Prof. Jin Zhijun obtained his Ph.D. from Gubkin Russian State University of Oil and Gas in 1992. He returned to China in 1993 and once served as the vice president of China University of Petroleum . In 2020, Prof. Jin Zhijun joined Peking University as the first dean of PKU Institute of Energy. As an esteemed scientist, he has published over 800 academic papers, won several National Science and Technology Awards , and is highly cited globally.
In his field of research, Prof. Jin Zhijun proposed a sealing ability evaluation method for the dynamic evolution process of shale caprock, which can be used to guide the arrangement of risk wells and the exploration of oil and gas. He also revealed a new mechanism of compound formation of hydrocarbons under the influence of deep fluids, pushing the frontiers of oil and gas research.
In his sphere of work, Prof. Jin Zhijun was the first to introduce North American shale gas explorations into China. On an international scale, he participated in the assessment of oil and gas resources in the central and northern regions of Western Siberia, and proposed the Sino-Russian oil pipeline which was jointly recognized by the Chinese and Russian governments. Together with Prof. Kontorovich A.E., he has trained plenty of Chinese and Russian graduate students and strengthened bilateral academic exchanges.
