Peking University, December 2, 2022: Recently, the China Association for Science and Technology announced the supplementary selection list for the first batch of 2021-2025 National Popular Science Education Bases. Based on its outstanding work in science popularization, Saihanba National Forest Park’s Field Science Observation Research Station made the list.

The station is Peking University’s (PKU) first national field scientific observation and research station, constructed independently by PKU with academician Fang Jingyun as the head. The 1-hectare space used for popular science education has a construction area of 2650 square meters, and boasts 4 laboratories and 1 greenhouse, along with other facilities including a library, a canteen and multi-purpose classrooms. The space can accommodate 100 people, and is able to fulfil popular science teaching and display needs. Around 40 researchers are involved in the station’s science popularization work.

The station’s science popularization work aims to stand at the forefront of scientific research to fulfil national strategic needs by exploring public cooperation services. Through research, the station has made important findings with regard to ecological responses to global change, biodiversity conservation and sustainable development. These findings have provided statistical support for the biodiversity benefits and management strategies of man-made forests and offer crucial suggestions for the development of Saihanba and China’s man-made forests.

Getting selected as a National Popular Science Education Base is recognition of the station’s work in ecological civilisation construction. Saihanba National Forest Park’s national field scientific observation and research station will continue to improve its science popularization output in terms of both depth and breadth, and better the scientific basis of the “Saihanba spirit.”
