PKU crowned champion at the 10th World University Student Supercomputing Competition

Peking University, May 13, 2023: Despite facing tough competition from more than 300 teams, Peking University has emerged as the champion of the 10th World University Student Supercomputing Competition for the first time.
The competition was held May 6-10, 2023, at the University of Science and Technology of China. Organized by the Asia Supercomputer Community, the event is the largest supercomputing competition in the world and saw over 10,000 students from universities around the world competing.
The competition required teams to design and train two AI language models with 1.5 billion and 17.9 billion parameters, respectively. Participants were tested on their abilities to come up with their own model training strategies, and meet strict accuracy requirements while pursuing extreme performance. During the competition, the teams were tasked with designing and building supercomputers on site, with a focus on cutting-edge competencies including AI language modelling and hydrologic modelling. The finals also featured a “super” team competition, in which participants were grouped across teams and geographic locations to complete tasks.
The Peking University team stood out for its impressive performance in a range of categories, including the application of the climate hydrological model WRF-Hydro and the machine learning molecular dynamics application DeePMD. The team's comprehensive understanding of supercomputing systems and applications, as well as its excellent performance optimization abilities, propelled it to the top spot, with the University of Science and Technology of China winning second place in the competition.
The competition was an opportunity for young computer scientists to showcase their skills and knowledge, and to gain valuable experience in building and optimizing supercomputers. It also highlighted the growing importance of supercomputing in a range of fields, from climate modelling to AI research. The team's outstanding achievement will serve as a source of inspiration for forthcoming batches of students to continually strive for excellence in the field of AI research.
