Peking University team earns third place in Spencer-RIMS Risk Management Challenge

Peking University, May 22, 2024: A team of four students from the Department of Risk Management and Insurance, School of Economics at Peking University (PKU), clinched third place in the 2024 Spencer-RIMS Risk Management Challenge, achieving the best result for Chinese universities.
The final of this renowned competition was staged recently as part of the Risk and Insurance Management Society (RIMS) 2024 Annual Conference and Exhibition, held in San Diego, the United States.
The PKU team consisted of Su Haoyang, Zhang Xingjian, Ren Bokai, and Yu Dongyang, undergraduates from the Department of Risk Management and Insurance, with Liu Xinli, deputy director of the department, serving as their coach.
In the final round, teams were tasked with identifying the current risks faced by the city of Tukwila, Washington, the U.S., and proposing risk management solutions. The PKU team thoroughly analyzed Tukwila's financial data, social news, and official reports to prepare their case study.
Their detailed case study report, combining professional knowledge with real-life context, earned them third place in the final. Representatives from IIRM Hyderabad in India secured first place, while Illinois State University in the U.S. finished second.
The Risk Management Challenge is a global competition for students, where university teams compete to develop and present the most comprehensive risk management report based on a case study, according to the organizers. The 2024 Risk Management Challenge spanned seven months and attracted 144 participants from 38 universities in nine countries.
