Prof. Liu Ruochuan awarded 2024 Ramanujan Prize
Jul 24, 2024
Peking University, July 24, 2024: Prof. Liu Ruochuan has been awarded the 2024 Ramanujan Prize for young mathematicians from developing countries. He is recognized "for his fundamental contributions to p-adic Hodge theory, especially his foundational study of relative p-adic Hodge theory and his remarkable work on rigidity and the Riemann-Hilbert correspondence for p-adic local systems," according to the organizers.
Prof. Liu is a Boya Distinguished Professor and the Vice Dean of the School of Mathematical Sciences at Peking University (PKU). His current research focuses on p-adic aspects of number theory and arithmetic geometry, particularly p-adic Hodge theory, p-adic automorphic forms, and the p-adic Langlands program.
Liu obtained his bachelor's and master's degrees in mathematics from Peking University and his Ph.D. from MIT in 2008. He is considered one of the foremost arithmetic geometers working in China and his work has been well received by top mathematicians in the field of p-adic Hodge theory.
For the past decade, he has played a major role in developing arithmetic geometry in China. He has received numerous awards and honors, including the 2020 China Youth Science and Technology Award, the 2019 Xplorer Prize, and the 2017 National Science Fund Award for Distinguished Young Scholars.
The Ramanujan Prize for young mathematicians from developing countries has been awarded annually since 2005 and is administered jointly by the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) and the International Mathematical Union. The prize is awarded to a researcher from a developing country who is under 45 years of age as of December 31 of the award year and who has conducted outstanding research under challenging conditions in a developing country. Researchers working in any branch of the mathematical sciences are eligible.
Previous recipients of the prestigious prize from the PKU Math community include Prof. Shi Yuguang and Prof. Xu Chenyang, who were awarded in 2011 and 2016 respectively.
