Peking University, October 23, 2024: In the vast desert, the Mogao Caves stand as a treasure trove of human civilization. Over a century ago, the discovery of the hidden library caves revealed a trove of Dunhuang manuscripts and artifacts that have since been scattered across the globe. Chinese scholars, in their quest to reclaim and study these cultural relics, have embarked on international journeys, and among them is Professor Rong Xinjiang.
Prof. Rong, from the Department of History, has spent four decades traversing 11 countries and 48 cities searching for traces of Dunhuang history. His relentless pursuit has culminated in the publication of his book, "Searching for Dunhuang Around the World".

This book is more than just an academic memoir; it is a significant contribution to the history of global Dunhuang studies. It chronicles the adventures and insights of a top scholar, offering readers both an engaging narrative and a wealth of knowledge.
Prof. Rong’s journey began in the early 1980s, when he set out with hand-drawn maps and a determination to visit academic luminaries and institutions. His travels have taken him from London to Paris, from Copenhagen to St. Petersburg, in pursuit of the scattered fragments of Dunhuang’s legacy.

The book is a compilation of Prof. Rong’s experiences, filled with little-known stories of the hardships and joys of his academic quest, as well as his unique perspectives and reflections. It is written in a clear and engaging style, making it an excellent introduction to Dunhuang studies for general readers and a source of inspiration for professionals.

"Dunhuang is in China, but Dunhuang studies belong to the world," Prof. Rong emphasizes. His book, published by Zhonghua Book Company, was launched in June 2024 during a unique event spanning five countries and seven locations, reflecting the global nature of his quest.
The future of Chinese Dunhuang studies, according to Prof. Rong, lies in the international exchange of the latest research findings. PKU has always been a stronghold for Dunhuang studies, with a legacy of scholars such as Luo Zhenyu, Wang Guowei, Hu Shih, Chen Yuan, Xiang Da, and Wang Chongmin, who have contributed tremendously to the field. The torch of Dunhuang studies continues to be passed down at PKU, ensuring its ongoing development.
