Hu Ka Pou (Law School):
"I feel that Peking University has always been deeply connected to the growth of China, and I aspire to be a part of that journey. In the future, I hope to use my knowledge and skills to contribute to the development of Macao and the advancement of the Greater Bay Area."
Having spent several years in Beijing, Hu has immersed himself in the city's vibrant culture—experiencing the warmth of its people, uncovering hidden culinary gems, and building friendships, as well as making himself at home with his Beijing-native roommate. These experiences have allowed him to truly embrace the essence of the city.
"Beijing is a very welcoming place, and it's becoming even more so. It's a vast city with so much to explore. There's endless knowledge to gain here, and you can experience many different cultures within China," Hu shares, encouraging his peers from Macao to seize the opportunities that Beijing offers.
Hu also highlights the importance of having a clear purpose: "Think about what you want to study and how it can help you make a positive impact back home, contributing to something bigger than yourself."
Yuan Sio Mei (School of Economics):
"Living and studying in Beijing has allowed me to experience firsthand the cultural, social, and economic dynamics of the mainland while staying deeply connected to my roots in Macao. This dual perspective enables me to understand and appreciate the unique characteristics of both. "
"I vividly remember how nervous I was, because around 200 students were attending the class and it was my first time teaching others my mother tongue. However, the students' enthusiasm and eagerness to learn about Macao's culture quickly turned my nerves into enjoyment," recalls Yuan Sio Mei, a senior majoring in international economics and trade at PKU.
This memorable moment occurred during her freshman year, when she tutored a Cantonese class organized by the Macao Culture Communication Association. Reflecting on the experience, Yuan describes it as both challenging and deeply rewarding. "The positive feedback I received afterward made it even more meaningful," she shares.
Cheong Cheng Peng (Guanghua School of Management):
"In recent years, Macao has been actively promoting the "1+4" appropriate diversification development strategy, with modern financial services and high technology being two of the four key focus areas. These align closely with my primary degree in Economics and Finance, as well as my dual degree in Artificial Intelligence. I hope to apply what I have learned to give back to Macao, contributing to the realization of Macao's economic diversification."
"When I communicate with my classmates, they often see Macao only as a place for tourism and gaming, a paradise for the wealthy. In such moments, I share some 'real Macao' stories with them," Cheong Cheng Peng explains.
He believes that the future of Macao will not be limited to a one-dimensional, gaming-centric economy, but will evolve into a multi-industry, integrated economy where various sectors complement and enhance one another. Looking ahead, Cheong aspires to contribute his expertise to support Macao's economic diversification and development.
Cheong has made the best of his time in Beijing by socializing and exploring, making him familiar with both the campus and the city. He believes that "Whether you face academic setbacks or struggle to fit in socially, learn to accept yourself, adjust your mindset, and face challenges with a positive attitude. Always believe that you can overcome difficulties. I welcome everyone to PKU – it will be an unforgettable academic journey that will last a lifetime!"
Lam Chin Pong (University of MacauExchange Student, PKU College of Engineering):
"I envision myself as a cultural and academic bridge. I believe that by contributing to the dialogue between Macao and the mainland, I can help to weave a richer narrative of shared history and common goals. It's about more than just studying; it's about being an active participant in a community that cherishes knowledge, fosters innovation, and strives for excellence."
"My journey at PKU has been more than just an educational pursuit; it's been a journey of cultural immersion and exchange," says Lam Chin Pong.
Engaging deeply in the academic environment, Lam took part in the "New Engineering Research and Practice" project at PKU's College of Engineering, exploring cutting-edge engineering solutions. This experience marked a pivotal moment for him, underscoring the crucial role of entrepreneurial spirit and innovation in shaping both the future of education and the nation's progress.
"Yanyuan is where dreams take flight." These are the words inscribed in a book detailing the rich history of PKU's engineering legacy gifted by Li Yongmei, Assistant Dean of the College of Engineering. Those words have become a personal mantra for Lam and PKU has since become his own Shangri-La, a sanctuary for nurturing my academic and career aspirations.
