[My CNY Story] A Journey of Cultural Exploration and Self Discovery
Feb 06, 2025

Peking University, February 6, 2025: This year’s Chinese New Year marks the first time I’m spending it away from home and family. After turning 21, I gave myself the challenge of a 16-day solo trip across Taiwan, leaving my footprints in 7 cities from Taipei to Kaohsiung.

Watching the red glowing Sun sink into the horizon at Gaomei Wetlands was truly a breathtaking sight.

While Taiwan is famous for its street food and delicacies, it was the breathtaking landscapes that truly captivated me. From chasing sunsets at Gaomei Wetlands to cycling around Sun Moon Lake and exploring the Alishan Mountain, I was in awe of Taiwan’s rich biodiversity and enchanting scenery.

The conservation of natural spaces is exceptional, as demonstrated by the Sun Moon Lake and the Alishan Mountains, despite both being popular tourist destinations.

I spent New Year’s Eve in Kaohsiung, where the city buzzed with energy and festive spirit. The annual light displays, like the Wonderland Winter Amusement Park featuring floating Jiikawa cartoon characters at Love River Bay, created a magical atmosphere.

Light festivals are the highlight of the Chinese New Year celebrations in Taiwan. Apart from the centerpiece, there are usually many other pop up installations and street markets.

I joined the locals for a stroll through the celebrations after their reunion dinners, known as 围炉, feeling like a part of their traditions. Surrounded by vibrant festivities and under stunning fireworks, I connected with my own family, exchanging wishes for abundance of health and prosperity in the Year of the Snake.

Amid the bustling activities of the festive season, I learned the valuable skill of embracing solitude. Cultivating the ability to enjoy and productively spend time alone became one of the most meaningful takeaways of this coming-of-age journey. As we step into the new year, it's essential to not only rest and recharge but also take time to reflect on the past year and set new personal goals.

Despite being miles away from home, the warmth and hospitality of the locals made this year's Chinese New Year celebration every bit as festive and exciting as those in the past.

This experience not only allowed me to explore Taiwan but also gave me the opportunity to reconnect with myself. Despite being miles away from Singapore, I met old friends and made new ones throughout the trip. The warmth and hospitality of the locals made a lasting impression, transforming my first solo Chinese New Year into a memory I'll cherish for years to come.
