Peking University, June 1, 2026: On the morning of May 30, Peking University (PKU) held an international symposium titled "Artificial Intelligence and the New Global Era: Challenges, Missions and Responsibilities of Journalism and Communication Discipline". The event brought together more than 200 scholars and experts from China and abroad to discuss the future development of journalism and communication in an era shaped by rapid advances in artificial intelligence and profound global change.

At the opening ceremony, Xinhua Deputy Editor-in-Chief Ren Weidong noted that academia and industry should work together to help the news industry face current challenges, fulfill its mission and shoulder its responsibilities. PKU Vice President Chu Xiaobo highlighted that the symposium aimed to reflect on the development of journalism and communication studies in China and deepen cooperation between Xinhua News Agency and PKU. He added that PKU would continue contributing to China's news industry, international communication, and the development of philosophy and social sciences.
International and domestic scholars also shared their perspectives on the evolving role of journalism and communication. Dr. Shirley Ho, associate vice president of Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, commended PKU's School of Journalism and Communication for its contributions to China's global communication efforts and its role in laying a strong foundation for exploring new frontiers in the AI-driven global era. Zhou Yong, dean of the School of Journalism and Communication at Renmin University of China, highlighted the importance of theoretical innovation, technological support and practical solutions in addressing the pressing questions facing China and the world.
The subsequent keynote forums focused on two major themes: "Changes in the Global Landscape and Global Communication" and "Artificial Intelligence and Disciplinary Development". Parallel sessions in the afternoon explored topics including autonomous knowledge systems, international communication and talent cultivation, the Marxist view of journalism, cultural inheritance and innovation, AI-driven industry development, academic frontiers, and journalism history.
