Peking University, Apr. 1, 2012: With the theme of “To Advocate First-class and Pursue Excellence”, the forum in commemoration of the tenth anniversary of the establishment of Biomedical English Program was held on March 26, 2012.
More than fifty delegates were present, including Academician Han Qide (president of Peking University Health Science Center (PKUHSC), vice chairman of the NPC Standing Committee and chairman of China Science and Technology Association), Professor Ke Yang (deputy director of PKU HSC and PKU Executive Vice President). The forum was hosted by Professor Guo Liping, director of Applied Linguistics Department and deputy director of the School of Foundational Education.
The forum began in a relaxing ambience with Professor Han extending congratulations to the tenth anniversary of the Biomedical English Program on behalf of PKU. Han approved the achievements in the last decade and emphasized the “universal” nature of college education, implying the consistence of the establishment of the major with the theme. Han further suggested, since undergraduate students without much experience often choose their majors under the influence of their family and the society, they may not have a clear vision for their own path. He then recommended a clear goal of the major to promote interdisciplinary contacts later on.

Professor Guo Liping later reported the progress of the staff members, academic achievements and career choices for graduates in the last ten years since the establishment. She insisted on the principle of “providing medical-based English education, nurturing interdisciplinary experts against international background, and solid-basis & wide-career choices”, so as to create features distinct from English programs in other colleges. With the support of the university and all the teaching staff, the program has both obtained a certain scale and gained social influence, leading the professional development on the national stage.

Professor Ke Yang pointed out that, as students were somehow confused about the Biomedical English Program since its establishment, it could take advantage of its tenth anniversary to let people know more about it. She said that faculties had been improving the subject for ten years. And she was glad that students could learn both English and medical science from the project to increase their career advantages.

Then alumnus of different grades gave some speeches. They are now doing great in different fields, such as China Medical Board [of New York] and People’s Medical Publishing House. They recalled many details of their college life, expressed sincere wishes and offered objective suggestions. Their words encouraged students present to set clear goals and cherish the opportunity to study in such a good environment.
Later, students and teachers had interactions. Each question and answer would bring applause and laughter, which made the conference relaxing and enjoyable.
In the end, Professor Guo Liping made a conclusion speech. She said that with the support of teachers and students, the Biomedical English Program had attained some achievements in the past years. And she believed that teachers would face greater challenges to make the subject development better in an increasingly competitive environment in the future.
