News & Events | About PKU News | Contact | Site Search Peking University, May. 29, 2012: Celebration Meeting of Centennial Anniversary of School of Economics, namely the 110th Anniversary of Economics Discipline, Peking University (PKU) was held at PKU Hall on May 25. Many political leaders of China were present. Over 1,600 people including PKU leaders, guests from all circles of society, teachers, students and alumni of School of Economics attended the meeting. guests of the celebration meeting Li Keqiang, First Vice Premier of China sent his congratulation letter, in which he recalled his life at PKU and acknowledged the glorious achievements of School of Economics in the past century. He hoped the school to continue cultivating talents who can shoulder responsibilities and carry on the fine traditions of PKU while heading for a brighter future. Sun Qixiang, Dean of School of Economics gave a speech at the meeting, recalling the past 100 years’ history of the development of the school and those predecessors who contributed to every step of its progress. She expressed her gratitude for the support from the society and her will to lead the school to surpass itself with a spirit of dedication and innovation. PKU President Zhou Qifeng also spoke highly of the achievements of the school in cultivating talents for the country and expressed gratitude to the alumni who devoted themselves to the advancement of economics of China. Later, a short video in commemoration of the centennial anniversary of School of Economics was played on the large screen, introducing the history and conveying the blessings. An award ceremony for 30 elderly professors who made significant contributions to the economic discipline at PKU and the development of China’s economy was held before the meeting concluded with the singing of the song Anthem to Motherland by all present. PKU President Zhou Qifeng giving awards to honored professors Introduction of School of Economics The academic structure of School of Economics achieves high integration of the theoretical economics and the applied economics, and the integration of the economic history and the modern economics. It has innovatively developed and gradually advanced expertise in several new fields to adapt to the needs of China’s economic development and system changes. School of Economics has a strong faculty consisting of both distinguished senior scholars and a large number of young academic leaders. In 2011, the school has 76 fulltime faculty members in total, including 27 professors, 35 associate professors, and 14 assistant professors. There are also 81 post-doctoral research fellows in the school. One third of the faculty received their Ph. D overseas. School of Economics, PKU was established in 1985. Its predecessor is Department of Economics, established in 1912 by Yan Fu, after he was assigned the President of PKU. It is one of the oldest faculties in the university, and the first economics faculty among China’s higher education institutions.
