The first “Asia–Global Dialogue 2012” held at PKU Shenzhen Graduate School
Jun 06, 2012

Peking University, June 4, 2012: On the morning of June 2, the first annual forum “Asia–Global Dialogue 2012” was held at the International Conference Center at Shenzhen Graduate School, Peking University. Themed as “Re-defining China’s role in Global growth”, the forum aimed at exploring issues such as Asian economic development, China’s achievements in Asian urbanization, and the sustainable and balanced development of Chinese economy.

Hai Wen, vice-President of PKU, chancellor of Shenzhen Graduate School, emphasized in his opening remarks that in the era of global economic recovery, Chinese market was very important to Asia and the world. The forum provided a good opportunity for the world’s experts to discuss crucial issues and present practical countermeasures to China’s current problems.

Scholars, bankers and a Nobel laureate in economics repeatedly stressed the importance of increasing domestic consumption, guaranteeing fair market competition, and enhancing emission reductions.

In his keynote speech "A Growth Strategy for China and the World in a Difficult Decade of Global Economy", Lord Nicholas Stern, a professor of London School of Economics and Political Science, suggested that China should invest more in research and projects on the reduction of carbon emissions.

American Nobel laureate in economics, Michael Spence, pointed out that the unbalanced internal distribution of wealth was an arduous task China must confront. Spence said that China was currently experiencing a middle-income trap, which often occurred when a country or region saw a suspension of economic growth after per capita GPD reached about US $6,000. To deal with it, China must strive for a fair market economy in order to achieve sustainable growth.

Spanning two-and-a-half intensive days, "Asia-Global Dialogue 2012" included plenary sessions, parallel track discussions, luncheon talks, and an optional one-day visit to southern China.

"Asia-Global Dialogue" will provide a global platform for CEOs, entrepreneurs, financiers, policymakers and civil society leaders to engage in discussions on the foremost global challenges and their influence on Asian and global business and finance.
