PKU Prof. Wang Longde Elected CAE Academician

Peking University, Beijing, Dec 6: The Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) announced on Dec 2 that 48 prominent scientists have been elected academicians, including Prof. Wang Longde, Chairman of the Chinese Preventive Medicine Association and Dean of the School of Public Health, Peking University.
 

 

Prof. Wang, 62, was among the three newly-elected academicians of CAE’s Division of Engineering Management. Other 45 are of the Division of Mechanical and Vehicle Engineering (4), Division of Information and Electronic Engineering (3), Division of Chemical, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (6), Division of Energy and Mining Engineering (6), Division of Civil, Hydraulic and Architecture Engineering (6), Division of Environment & Light and Textile Industries Engineering (6), Division of Agriculture (7) and Division of Medical and Health (7), bringing the total number of CAE academicians to 756,.


A CAE academician is the highest national academic title in engineering science and technology and is a lifelong honor. New members are added every two years, with a quota of no more than 60 for each election.


In addition, six scientists were elected foreign CAE academicians, among whom five were from the United States and one from the United Kingdom.

 


Academician Wang Longde:


Chairman of the Chinese Preventive Medicine Association (CPMA) and Dean of PKU’s School of Public Health; Vice-minister of China’s Ministry of Health (1995-2007).


Wang has been devoted to the administrative work and study of epidemiology and public health. He has been instrumental in making a response to AIDS a priority for China, and was awarded in 2005 by UNAIDS for his leadership and continuous effort in the field.


In the same year, he received second award of the “National Prize for Progress in Science and Technology” from the State Council for the series of books he published on health promotion within communities.


In 2007, China’s Ministry of Health was awarded “Stop TB Partnership-Kochon Prize” for the remarkable achievements in the implementation and expansion of TB control, reaching full population coverage, with special mention to then Vice-minister Wang Longde for leadership and commitment resulting in the achievement of the World Health Assembly targets.
